Make sure your view distance is set to 10 minimum. It wouldn't hurt to make a basic collector just to test. What you build doesn't effect the biome so won't show up. All you need to use it is your map seed. For the reason mentioned above, you need to know the seed of your world to use Mineshaft Finder, unless, of course, you want to find a seed for a new world. You have to do this all the way from the surface down to bedrock as well.

I imagine there's also a very slim possibility that the app's calculations differ from that of Minecraf because of technical reasons, but I have yet to see that happen. The starting points are very accurate though. Shading is an indication of how hilly the area is - it doesn't correspond to the exact hills in the game as I can't do that quickly enough at this scale. I believe this happens mostly in ocean biomes, if the mineshaft would partially end up in the water. . These are usually rooms with dirt floors though other map features, like ravines, may intersect with them. I'm wondering if I keep missing them? Only around the origin point of the map, the chance for abandoned mineshafts is actually smaller. Otherwise, however, you're dependent on the server owner, who started the world and has access to the savegame and config files. Pretty sure they shouldn't despawn if within 32 blocks of you like all other mobs. Every chunk has a 1% chance to contain a starting point. As mentioned before, the chunks highlighted in the brighter color are merely assumed to contain a piece of a mineshaft.
